At Greenfield Primary we strive to ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of mathematical experiences.  We aim to promote children’s enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activities, exploration and discussion.

We have started building a mastery approach to work, where children are taught specific skills and then practice using these to solve mathematical problems and reason about them.

In Mathematics children will be able to:

  • become confident and competent with numbers and the number system;

  • develop their ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts;

  • develop and use a wide range of mathematical vocabulary;

  • develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented;

  • explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts;

Key Stage 1 and Year 5 and 6 use the Rising Stars planning and books to support the development of mathematical skills throughout the school. Year 3 and 4 use the White Rose mixed age planning. All year groups use a variety of resources such as the Rising Stars Teachers' Guides, Power Maths, Collins Shanghai Maths and examples from the NRICH and the NCETM websites to support teaching for mastery.  We have developed a calculation progression scheme to make sure that calculations are performed consistently throughout the school.

Year 1 children learn a lot of number facts by singing, chanting and learning rhymes. Children in Years 2-6 follow a programme by NAHT Aspire called "Fast Learning" to help with learning number facts. The aim is for all children to know all their multiplication facts off by heart by the end of Year 4. In November 2018 we also purchased TTRockstars for Key Stage 2. All children in Years 3-6 have their own username and password. They can log on and play games to help them learn their times tables. It is definitely proving very popular and children are keen to win points and get in the Top 20. Every 3-4 weeks we celebrate the Top 20 children  in the school in Assembly.
