At Greenfield Primary we strive to ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of mathematical experiences. We aim to promote children’s enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activities, exploration and discussion.
Where possible we use a mastery approach to work, where children are taught specific skills and then practice using these to solve mathematical problems and reason about them.
In Mathematics children will be able to:
become confident and competent with numbers and the number system;
develop their ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts;
develop and use a wide range of mathematical vocabulary;
develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented;
explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts;
Years 1-6 use the Rising Stars planning to support the development of mathematical skills throughout the school. All year groups use a variety of resources including the Power Maths, Maths - No Problem, NRICH, White Rose and the NCETM websites. We have developed a calculation progression scheme to make sure that calculations are performed consistently throughout the school.
Year 1 children learn a lot of number facts by singing, chanting and learning rhymes. Children in Years 2-6 learn times tables and are encouraged to use TTRockstars at home and at school.
