Literacy

Our aims for Literacy:

  • Ascribes meanings to marks
  • Use phonics to decode phonetically regular words
  • Read simple sentences
  • Discuss what has been read
  • Use phonics knowledge to write simple words and sentences

A daily discrete phonics session is taught in small ability groups, which includes a tricky word test each Wednesday based on words given for homework.

Guided reading and individual reading both take place weekly. Individual reading books are changed every Tuesday at the teachers discretion and sent home. We use PM and Oxford Reading Tree books to build on phonics knowledge and encourage children to use the three reading cues (visual, meaning and structure).
